The historic Seville Quarter welcomed local dignitaries and hundreds of residents May 27 as Fiesta Pensacola launched its 77th annual Fiesta celebration in downtown Pensacola.
The ten-day heritage festival, held each year following Memorial Day, is designed to foster community pride while celebrating Pensacola’s history and attracting visitors to the area. One of the evening’s signature events, the ceremonial “Surrender of Pensacola,” pays tribute to the city’s Spanish roots and the arrival of Spanish conquistador Don Tristan de Luna, who established Pensacola in 1559.
Before the ceremony, Fiesta Pensacola’s royal court was introduced, including Ted Gund as Don Tristan de Luna and Annlee Leidner as Fiesta Queen.
Sponsored by Emmanuel Sheppard & Condon, this year’s surrender ceremony featured several local leaders portraying representatives of modern-day Pensacola. Participants included Mayor D.C. Reeves, Pensacola Fire Department Deputy Chief Justin Hoard, Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons, Supervisor of Elections Robert Bender, Naval Air Station Pensacola Commanding Officer Captain Chandra Newman, and newly appointed Pensacola Police Chief Eric Winstrom.
Fiesta Pensacola festivities continued throughout the week with several highly anticipated events, including the Grand Fiesta Parade, Fiesta Boat Parade, and Fiesta All Krewe Ball.
