Downtown Pensacola burst into color and celebration on January 3, as the 15th annual Pensacola Mardi Gras Kick-Off Celebration officially launched the 2026 season. Hosted at the iconic Seville Quarter, this family-friendly event drew thousands to mark the transition from holiday cheer to Mardi Gras magic.
The festivities kicked off inside Seville Quarter’s Phineas Phoggs ballroom, where doors opened to the public. A special VIP reception was held upstairs, setting a festive tone. Town Crier Marty Stanovich proclaimed each participating krewe, formally welcoming them into the season with traditional fanfare.
Outside, the streets transformed into a “static parade.” Mardi Gras floats lined Palafox and Government Streets in a stationary display. Krewes arrived in full regalia—dazzling costumes, masks, and beads—turning Pensacola’s downtown into a vibrant showcase of the season.
Revelers strolled among the floats, admiring intricate designs and catching early throws. Highlighting the evening was a brass-led Second Line processional, featuring the soulful sounds of The New Orleans Ramblers. Royalty and dignitaries paraded the route, with a priest blessing the floats and krewes in a ceremonial tradition. The procession culminated in the cutting and distribution of free King Cake, symbolizing good luck for the season ahead.
This Twelfth Night-inspired event captured Pensacola’s unique Gulf Coast Mardi Gras spirit: inclusive, community-driven, and joyful. With over 80 krewes participating across the season, the kick-off set the stage for upcoming parades, balls, and the Grand Mardi Gras Parade on February 14, culminating on Fat Tuesday, February 17.
Whether tossing beads or dancing in the Second Line, attendees embraced the theme: Let the good times roll!
